The FemTech challenge and how we can all contribute to the FemTech industry

As we are constantly developing our business, we are always searching for opportunities to make an impact on people’s lives through education and empowerment.

So we developed the FemTech challenge. The ultimate program that connects FemTech enthusiasts with FemTech companies through a real-life challenge.

But first, what is FemTech?

For some years now, a new phenomenon has been around, one that is focused on women's health and aims to make their lives more comfortable and easier. In case you do not know what we are talking about, wonder no more. “Femtech”, a term that has become popular over time and is predicted to have a large impact on women’s lives, turned into a booming industry that is expected to reach a market value of nearly 50 billion dollars by 2025.

Femtech (or female technology) is a fast-growing industry of software, diagnostics, products, and services that use technology to focus on women's health: fertility solutions, period-tracking apps, pregnancy and nursing care, women's sexual wellness, and reproductive system health care.

This movement inspired us so much and it empowered us to bring a contribution to the Femtech industry as well. Therefore we developed the FemTech branding challenge in collaboration with Master Challenge, a startup from The Netherlands that is on a mission to bridge the gap between education and practice.

We ran our first edition of The Femtech challenge in winter and wanted to share with you how it went.

So … what is the FemTech challenge?

The FemTech Challenge is an online 2-month program in which a FemTech company and a team of FemTech enthusiasts (students & professionals) work together to solve a real-life challenge that a company is facing.

FemTech companies receive valuable solutions while getting access to a pool of talent and fresh “out-of-the-box” insights.

FemTech enthusiasts learn how to offer consultancy services while gaining real-life experiences.

The first edition of the FemTech challenge focused on branding and challenged FemTech enthusiasts to come up with branding strategies that strengthened the companies’ position in the market.

Companies that have participated in the FemTech challenge

In our first edition we had three companies, very different in their approach, but all similar in their mission: to improve women’s lives, from developing solutions to treat vaginal dryness due to menopause, to empowering women in science. All FemTech companies participated in our program with the objective to improve their branding efforts.

Madorra is developing a hand-held, noninvasive, medical device that women use at home to treat vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA). It is targeted at menopausal and post-menopausal women and breast cancer survivors' who are on medications that cause them severe menopausal symptoms. Vaginal atrophy affects over 43 million women in the US. Hormone therapy is often prescribed but can cause cancer and stroke, so many women refuse to take it. Madorra offers a safe, natural way to treat VVA without hormones.

FemTech enthusiasts that participated in the FemTech challenge

We had FemTech enthusiasts, both students and professionals from all over the world. Talents from countries such as Kenya, England, Texas, the Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania teamed up to solve branding challenges that the FemTech companies were facing.

The FemTech enthusiasts acquired consulting skills and, under professionals’ guidance, delivered advisory reports to their assigned companies.

The best team to provide an advisory report was the one for Elemental and they were rewarded with a monetary prize and a certification.

What did the participants think of the FemTech challenge:

Andra: "I found many things about the FemTech industry in the first place, and specifically from this challenge I learned that communication is the biggest point that can make a project successful."

Alexandra: "The Kohe Lele team provided our team the right amount of autonomy and leadership to get the job done. As challenges arose on our multi-national team, our team facilitator met them with positivity and practicality. I would never hesitate to work with them again."

Rosemond: "I gained insight on consulting for companies and marketing strategies. All the participants delivered high-quality results so we had great competition."
